PPC S.A. in RAIDO

Partner

PPC is the leading South-East European electric utility, with activities spanning electricity generation, distribution, and the sale of advanced energy products and services in Greece, Romania, and North Macedonia. With a total installed capacity of 12.2GW, consisting of thermal, hydro, and RES installations, PPC’s annual generation amounts to approximately 21TWh. The PPC Group is the leading energy supplier in Greece and Romania, servicing 8.8 million customers in total and providing them with approximately 33TWh of electricity and a wide range of energy products and services. Founded in 1950, PPC has been publicly listed since 2001, with shares traded on the Main Market of the Athens Exchange.

PPC Group’s strategic transformation plan is built upon three key pillars: a clean and resilient generation portfolio through ramped-up Renewables investments and accelerated lignite phase-out; modernization of its distribution networks with new technologies; and customer-centric retail services.

Role in RAIDO

PPC plays a key role in Pilot #1, which focuses on demonstrating and validating a ‘data for AI’ pipeline that integrates Digital Twins (DTs) and diffusion models to generate synthetic data. PPC contributes by providing operational data, domain expertise, and use-case validation to support the development and training of AI models. These models are aimed at improving forecasting processes for optimal planning of renewable energy supply, ultimately enhancing energy system efficiency and resilience while reducing CO₂ emissions. The pilot will showcase how AI models can be optimized through DTs in an active and continual learning framework.

PPC’s involvement is crucial in ensuring the accuracy and relevance of AI predictions in both central (supplier) and distributed (consumer) energy forecasting architectures. Additionally, the pilot will explore the integration of Explainable AI (XAI) and game-theoretic approaches into the training and deployment processes. An Edge-to-Cloud (E2C) dynamic deployment strategy will also be implemented, supporting centralized, decentralized, and hybrid scenarios, with continuous monitoring and feedback loops secured through blockchain technology.

PPC’s Bitakos PV plant, located in Thiva (Thebes) in central Greece, approximately 90 kilometers northwest of Athens, is a key asset for this pilot. The Mediterranean climate of Thiva, characterized by hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters, provides favorable conditions for solar energy generation, with ample sunshine throughout the year. Summers often experience temperatures exceeding 30°C (86°F), ideal for consistent photovoltaic (PV) output. The Bitakos PV Plant was energized in February 2021, has an expected lifespan until 2041, and a total capacity of 2,641,410 Wp. It operates as an independent power generation unit and is connected to the grid through a suitable substation.
